WBCS Syllabus 2017: West Bengal Public Service Commission has released the official file for the syllabus of WBCS 2017 mains exam. WBCS Syllabus 2017 – Exam Pattern & Stages Involved
All the candidates who have applied for the Civil Services Examination of West Bengal will have to undergo three stages of selection, i.e. Preliminary, Mains and Personality Test and Interview. Candidates can check the exam pattern for all the stages of WBCS 2017 as given below.
Stage 1: Preliminary Exam
- There will be one exam in the preliminary examination on the topic of general studies.
- The paper will be objective type nature having 200 MCQ’s for 1 mark each. The total marks for the prelims will be 200.
- The Total time duration for the preliminary exam will be two and a half hours.
- The level of difficulty for the paper will be set on the basis of level of knowledge as expected from a graduate of any faculty of a recognized university.
- The paper will include questions covering the following fields of knowledge.

Stage 2: Mains Examination
- Candidates who are declared qualified in the preliminary examination will be able to appear for the mains exam of WBCS 2017.
- The mains exam will have a total of 6 compulsory papers and 2 papers on one optional subject as chosen by the candidates.
- The total marks for all the papers whether compulsory or optional will be 200 and the time allotted for all the exams will be 3 hours.

Mains Exam Compulsory Papers – Detailed Topics
- Paper I: Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali – Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from English to Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali
- Paper II: English – Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali to English.
- Paper III: General Studies-I : (i) Indian History with special emphasis on National Movement and (ii) Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal.
- Paper IV: General Studies-II : Science and Scientific & Technological advancement, Environment, General Knowledge and Current Affairs.
- Paper V: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India.
- Paper VI: Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning.

WBCS Syllabus 2017 – General Topics
- English Composition: Synonyms, Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases, Vocabulary test, Phrasal Verbs, the same words bearing more than one meaning, use of appropriate and qualifying words etc.
- General Science: General Appreciation & understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation & experience.
- History of India: General understanding of histoty in its social, economic and political aspects.
- Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal: Social,Physical and Economic Geography of the country and the main features of Indian Agricultural and Natural Resources with special reference to West Bengal.
- Indian Polity and Economy: Knowledge of the country‘s Political System, Panchayatee Raj, Community Development and Planning in India, Questions on the Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and character of the Nineteenth Century Resurgence, Growth of Nationalism and Attainment of Independence.
- General Mental Ability: Logical perception, understanding and natural conclusion.
